Bucklin Gathering 1949
It’s kind of hard to beat that gold mine picture from last week, so I’m not going to try. Hopefully we’ll have some fun with names this week. I tried to identify as much as I could from other photos, but wasn’t able to name them all. With the help of the Bucklin community we have everyone named. This is a photo from about 1949, probably in Hathaway. #13 is my great grandmother Addie Mae Hine Bucklin.
And as a special treat because of all of the responses (and because I just found this photo today in all of the stuff I got out of the house in Jennings while cleaning it out with my brother and sisters and nieces and nephew) I am attaching another photo of the same group on the same day. I think they took this one because when they looked at the first one closely on their phones, they could see that Grandma Addie wasn’t smiling. So they took another one. See the smile? Look really close!

New Case Tractor $5,000 in 1973
Herbert and Roy Bucklin ran the farm as a partnership, H.G & Roy Bucklin. Herbert took care of the rice and Roy took care of the cattle. They each helped the other when needed, but mostly stuck to their preferred specialty. Here is a receipt for one of their tractors in 1973.

Found this old photo of Grandma (Myrtle Sylvia Phenice Bucklin) and I really like it. So I scanned it and edited out the scratches and age spots. (On the photo, not on her!) I think it came out really nice.
It’s amazing how traits are passed down to children and grandchildren. I never really noticed a resemblance in my cousins and my grandmother. But when I started working on this photo, I really zoom in close to different features. And when I spent time looking at those features, they would remind me of many of my cousins. We are a product of our ancestors.

Van posted a phone copy of this last week where he talks about his mom’s near drowning experience here. I finally got a good scan and enhanced the image as much as I could. Maybe we can identity people better now.

My parents and I went to visit cousins in Hathaway. They had some old photos I had never seen before. This one is from 1941 with mom and her sisters in it. My mom was not too happy to see this photo. It was at the beach and she said that she almost drowned when she went swimming and has been afraid of the water ever since. This did not stop her from teaching us to swim and to not be afraid of the water. What a good mama.

Easter Fun Through the Ages
That crummy, dummy Easter Bunny left no eggs for me,
That crummy, dummy Easter Bunny hopped right by with glee!
I tracked him to my neighbor’s house and stood outside his door,
And when I saw that Bunny head, I knocked it to the floor.
I tied up all his whiskers and macramed his ears.
I sat down in my rocking chair and drank three beers.

This is my standard Easter post of a poem my mom wrote many years ago. For those who are paying attention, I have added two lines this year. I always thought it was missing something between hopping right by my house and me tying up his ears. How did I get to his ears to tie them up? Here is the answer! Conflict resolved.

Louis Charles Bucklin at Military Academy in Ada, Ohio.
Ray Bucklin (former 1st Lt Bucklin) thinks the 4th in the front row is Louis. “The military would have probably lined them up in alphabetical order. I have spent a lot of my life third or fourth in line.” I thought that one looked similar to Louis’s later photo so Ray is probably right.
Louis came home after his sister Jennie died around June 1893. I Googled the name on the flag and found it was Ohio Normal University (now Ohio Northern University).
I found Louis listed in two year books on ONU’s website:

Page 71 of both yearbooks list L. C. Bucklin from Calcasieu Co., LA in the Commercial Course Department.
Page 29 gives you a description of the Commercial College. I always wondered why he went to a military school, but that was just part of it. That page says, “There is nothing in which you can engage that will not call for a business knowledge.” That made me realize he must have gone there for the business education which would help him him run the farm.
The first part of the year books about the school are really interesting. Page 10 tells about the advantages over other schools, including nutritious food and electricity.
