100 Years Ago in Raymond, LA

Oct. 3, 1926 – The birthday celebration in Raymond, LA

I’ve written about the event from 100 years ago many times before, and so has cousin Joseph. I usually refer to the event as the Hine Havenar Twentieth Annual Double Birthday Celebration. I think it was first called that by Joseph in an article he wrote in June of 2015. (Here. And in a follow-up, here.) I’ve posted several photos from the event through the years, but not as many as I thought I had.

The event on October 3, 1926, was the celebration of the birthdays of my great great grandmother Susan G. “Sue” Stanbrough Hine and her friend Edessa Jane “Jennie” Welton Havenar. They had been celebrating their joint birthday since 1906. What’s really nice about that is that there are newspaper articles for both of the events. Though those don’t really compare to all of the nice photos that were taken at the 1926 event. It’s not that often that you have so many photos from an event 100 years ago. That’s why I had to write this post today.

The best photo is probably the one that has all of the people numbered on it. Many relatives through the years have helped to identify some of the people in the photo. I’ve made a few corrections and additions to that list as well. I’ve identified those with my initials, so you know what input I am responsible for. I’m always open to new suggestions as well. Here is the list:
