Cousins posting family stuff
We got to visit with Arlene Ware, Melvin Keys, and Steven Keys when we visited Louisiana. Here are a couple old Bucklin photos Arlene had that I had not seen before. Roy and Robert Louis Bucklin standing in front of the old Bucklin house. And a photo of the house showing the screened porch.
On our recent trip to the farm, I was able to scan some old photo albums thanks to Ada and Effie Whittington. This was an interesting photo found in Effie’s collection. My Great Grandmother Ada May Whittington Koll seems younger than most photos I remember seeing her in. Based on the age of the baby, I guess the photo was taken around 1930. That makes Ada about 50 here. I know I have seen a few younger photos, but there certainly are more of her in her later years so that is how I think of her.
On the left is Rosa Andrea Briggs Koll (1886-1976) holding her step-daughter Shirley Mae Koll (1928–1990). She was the second wife of Edward Henry Koll (1899–1983).
In the center is Ada May Whittington Koll (1881-1963) next to her sister-in-law, Maria Dora Koll Compton (1886-1958). And in the background is my Great Grandfather, Ada’s husband, John Rudolph Koll (1884–1965).
Let me know if I got any of this wrong.
I don’t know what year this one is. One of the floats has a Shamrock theme. Did Elton have St. Patrick’s Day parades? Uvonne says she thinks it is another homecoming parade. And her brothers Kurt and Brett with Grandma Ruth playing with the kittens. She thinks 1962.
It doesn’t snow very often here so you have to capture it on film.

The films of great great grandmother are great, but this one from Aunt Ruth’s collection is lots of fun. A bunch of grown men trying to hula hoop. Charles says this is at the Bruchhaus farm. Behind Grandma and Grandpa’s house they had a Barbecue house. He didn’t recognize any of the men.
To transfer these films to digital, I borrowed an old 8mm projector and a film transfer box from Jeannette Bucklin Jackson. It is a box of mirrors that allows me to line up my digital camera and projector to record the projected image. I always wanted to use software to clean them up and remove as much of the flickering as I could. But I haven’t got around to it in over 10 years so when I found them again on my computer, I decided now was the time to start uploading them. I did make a few quick attempts to reduce the flicker, but have not had good luck yet.

Today is Leigh Ann Hebert’s birthday. So how about a film from her Great Great Grandmother’s birthday party? Addie May Hine Bucklin and the family celebrating her 83rd birthday in September 1959. Happy Birthday!
Another old film for Leigh Ann’s birthday. The second half of this film is her dad, Charles Bruchhaus’ 5th birthday party. The first half is a livestock show that looks like it includes Uncle Roy and Jeannette and Doris Bucklin showing cattle.

These are the old Connors family 8mm films that Carolyn had transferred to VHS years ago. I did all I could to improve the picture quality, but VHS resolution is limited so it isn’t as sharp as the original films.
