Throwback Thursday Threefer: Part III

1906 - Harry Clifton Phenice

H. C. Phenice in Cripple Creek gold mine in Colorado circa 1906

Merry Christmas to my Phenice relatives. This is definitely one of my favorite photos.  I remember seeing it as a kid and liked it back then. Every time I see my mom she asks me about this photo. It was lost among the many photos she had and she didn’t know if it was still there. It’s not a large photo and it’s rather dark.  I found it and worked many hours on retouching the scan of it. It really is a special photo.  You’d be surprised if you saw the original photo.  You wouldn’t think there were so many details in the photo.  But there are.

The photo shows Harry Clifton Phenice in a gold mine in Cripple Creek, Colorado. (He is the good looking mustached man in the front.)  It is probably from around 1906, when the family lived for a short time in Colorado.  They came back because they missed the simplicity of the small town where they lived in Louisiana.  Not because he found gold and struck it rich.  Unless there is something that some of my relatives forgot to tell me.

  • That is an awesome photo. I don’t think I have ever seen a photo taken inside a mine. Reminds me of Indiana Jones.
